Meanwhile these three remain: faith, hope, and love; and the greatest of these is love. 1 Cor 13:13

Eternal Love

The lessons of all teachers and philosophers that would survive human beings on earth can be summarised into one word—love, that was instructed, commanded, and explained in action by Jesus, who said, “And now I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another” (Jn 13:34). The supremacy of love above all other greatest gifts or virtues is highlighted by Paul’s writings, “I may be able to speak the languages of human beings and even of angels, but if I have no love, my speech is no more than a noisy gong or a clanging bell. I may have the gift of inspired preaching; I may have all knowledge and understand all secrets; I may have all the faith needed to move mountains—but if I have no love, I am nothing. I may give away everything I have, and even give up my body to be burned—but if I have no love, this does me no good.” (1 Cor 13:1-3) It is surprising to know that the practice and possession of love is above everything, for it is eternal, “Meanwhile these three remain: faith, hope, and love; and the greatest of these is love” (1 Cor 13:13). Born with the inbuilt capacity to practice and extend love that transforms human society and families, are, in fact, a debt that we owe to fellow human beings, “Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another” (Rom 13:8). Let our families and friendships be filled with the radiance of eternal love that genuinely flows from our hearts.

Abba, thank you for being the source of love. Let your Spirit help us to drink from the wellspring of Your love that we may share it with others, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
