For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ Acts 17:28

Divine Offspring

The declaration about the identity of our true selves clarifies and verifies us as true believers. The foundation and existence of the very life of each of us begins with the plan of God as Job himself reveals, “In whose hand is the life of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind?” (Job 12:10). David, the Psalmist, also sings and celebrates this mystery of divine offspring, “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light” (Ps 36:9). Standing before the court of the Areopagus, Paul triumphantly declares his sonship as God’s offspring, “For in him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’” (Acts 17:28). The mystery that troubled and confused Jesus’ audience was His claim of divine sonship and His teaching to the followers to call God “Abba.” Letter to the Hebrews confirms the fact that we are siblings to Christ, “For both the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are of the same family. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers” (Heb 2:11). Let’s declare this divine mystery and cherish being children of God.

Abba, thank you for creating us us as your children. Let your Spirit help us understand and celebrate this mystery, in Jesus’ powerful name, Amen.
