About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Acts 16:25

Release Joy

An activity that is uniquely gifted to human beings is singing. Singing exalts the spirit, singing releases joy, singing makes us forget worries, and singing liberates and motivates. Hence, David invites even the creation to sing, “Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth” (Ps 96:1). Human history has millions of songs for varied moods and purposes, but let’s sing unto God for He has given us the gift, “Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy” (Ps 33:3). Even the fiery furnace did not block the three young men from sining and praising that brought the company of angel in their choir, “There in the furnace the three young men again started singing together in praise of God” (The Prayer of Azariah and the song of the three young men: verse 28). Triumphantly crossing the Red Sea, Moses expressed his gratitude along with the Israelites by singing and released joy, “Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD: ‘I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.’” (Ex 15:1). Like a fountain, a song should flow from our souls as we receive blessings in our lives, like Mary who raised her voice in acknowledgement of God’s favor, “And Mary sang, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.’” (Luke 1:46-47). Let’s meet often in God’s name and praise Him high by singing hymns.

Abba, thank you for the gift of singing. Let your Spirit rejoice in us as we worship you, in Jesus’ joyful name, Amen.

When my heart swims in anguish and my mind whirls in fear, help me dear Lord to sing of Your glory in faith-filled triumphant joy!
