When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them. Mt 9:36

Shepherd Is Needed

Social analysts and political thinkers try to find out the reasons for the miserable situation of the state, by reflecting upon the problems of citizens. At the very sight, Christ was able to find out, that the lack of real shepherd is the reason for the harassment and helplessness of the flock; and hence, He extended His ministry unto them, “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Mt 9:36). His assessment about the situation was the disproportionate number of workers for the multitude who were in need of service, “Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.’” (Mt 9:37). Even while understanding the necessity, He did not decide about the situation, instead asked the disciples to extend a combined prayer to His Father to send the right workers, “Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field” (Mt 9:38). Together with our compassionate Shepherd, let us look up to heaven and ask for assistance.

Abba, thank You for Your Son’s compassionate intersession on our behalf. Let Your Spirit help us know Your will, and abide by that. In Jesus’ Most Holy Name, Amen.
