And He said to him, “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.” Lk 10:28

The Twofold Love

The culture of the modern world leaves the man selfish and ignorant of the existence of God and the neighbor. As a representative of this type of mindset, a man came with the question to Jesus: And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” (Lk 10:25-26). The wisdom of Jesus gave him a question as an answer, that revealed the true intention of the questioner. So he answered and said, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” (Lk 10:27) The twofold love was the answer, and in that, the primary one was loving God that comes with four attributes, and loving the neighbor with one condition. Let’s keep this twofold love as the basic law of our lives, and remain approved by God, as Jesus said, “Do this and you will live” (Lk 10:28).

Abba, thank You for helping us to love You and our neighbors. Let Your Spirit increase in us this twofold love, that we may raise above mere self-love. In Jesus’ Most Wonderful Name, Amen.
