Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed. Mk 1:35

Place of Prayer

Even though He did not possess a single place for Himself, Jesus looked for a private place where He could enjoy the company of the Heavenly Father, right at the beginning of the day, as Mark has recorded: “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed” (Mk 1:35). The necessity for remaining in a close relationship with His Father, kept Him searching for lonely places, as He was wandering and preaching the Kingdom of God in many places: “So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed” (Lk 5:16). Spending the entire day with His disciples, did not excuse Him from seeking a separate place, even late at night: “Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God” (Lk 6:12). Let’s learn from Jesus the necessity of a place for prayer, and enjoy being in communion with the Heavenly Father for our spiritual nourishment.

Abba, thank You for inspiring us to remain alone with You, following the example of Your Son. Let Your Spirit move us to come close to You, as often as we can, in Jesus’ Most Powerful Name, Amen.
