God With Him

The excellent story of God’s providence and the success of Joseph was summarised by Stephen’s famous speech before the high priest in simple terms: “God was with him” (Acts 7:9). Imagine, what would normally happen when brothers themselves abandon and sell their young brother as a slave to foreign traders? But Joseph became the governor of the kingdom of Egypt, because the presence and favour of God was with him: “Jacob’s sons became jealous of their brother Joseph and sold him to be a slave in Egypt. But God was with him and brought him safely through all his troubles” (Acts 7:9-10). Two things were given as gifts to Joseph that attracted the King to set him high in honour: “When Joseph appeared before the king of Egypt, God gave him a pleasing manner and wisdom, and the king made Joseph governor over the country and the royal household” (Acts 7:10). As we too are the dearest children of God whom He purchased with the precious blood of His Son, we should rejoice and enjoy His accompanying presence that He may keep us safe through all the apparent troubles and struggles, and lead us to the greatest victory.

Abba, thank You for being with us despite our sinfulness and failures. Let Your Spirit convince us of the unfailing presence and providence that are continuously working in our favour, in Jesus’ Most Wonderful Name, Amen.
