You must shine among them like stars lighting up the sky. Phil 2:15

Vocation of Shining

The entire creation began with the command of God declaring light on it, and the mission of salvation also emerged with the arrival of His Son who claimed His identity as Light: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (Jn 8:12) The necessity of light is so essential to the world; hence, He commanded His followers to carry on His work of being lights: “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Mt 5:14-16) Not forgetting the Christian vocation is so crucial to the world, hence Paul writes to remind the believers in Philippi, not to be swept away by the culture of darkness that was prevalent and not be part of it, by warning: “so that you may be innocent and pure as God's perfect children, who live in a world of corrupt and sinful people. You must shine among them like stars lighting up the sky.” (Phil 2:15) May we, who have the privileged vocation, stay alert by receiving the light from the source of its creator and continue to emit the light that is needed for the world.

Abba, Thank You for giving us the vocation to be the light of the world. Let Your Spirit make us glow and continue with the mission of shining, In Jesus’ Most Illuminating Name, Amen.
