Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and reject not your mother’s teaching; for they are a fair garland for your head, and pendants for your neck. Pro 1:8-9

Ornaments of Grace

The entire nurturing of our childhood gets enhanced by the words that we receive from our parents. Our eating of food, drinking of milk, waking up, learning, playing games, taking shower and going to sleep are all regulated by their kind and loving words. Their words are like the foundation to the whole building, however tall we may build in the course of life. Hence, they need to be guarded and treasured as priceless possession, as wealth for the entire voyage of life. Solomon goes a step further and praises them as ornaments of grace to be worn by every individual with pride and honor: “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and reject not your mother’s teaching; for they are a fair garland for your head, and pendants for your neck.” (Pro 1:8-9) God himself wrote a command in favor of the honor that is due to parents, as a condition to receive blessings from Him: “Honour your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” (Dt 5:16) May we consider them as the best jewel that are provided by God, and let our life be governed by the discipline we have gained through our parents.

Abba, thank You for your provision of our parents. Let Your Spirit make us value their instruction and teachings, and wear them as ornaments of grace, In Jesus’ Most Beautiful name, Amen.
