My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother... Pros 1:8

A Graceful Ornament

Proverbs 1:8 - 9

My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother; For they will be a graceful ornament on your head, And chains about your neck.

“My son”—written by Solomon, the wise man.

You can take it this way also: God is asking you. You are My beloved, My son.

That is how He wants to call each and every one of you. He enjoys being called “Abba.”

But only His beloved Son was able to live up to expectations. That’s why heavens opened when He was baptized by John the Baptist. And there came the Spirit of God, such as a dove, and the Voice thundered from Heaven: He is My Son.

You can be His son, too.

All that He is asking is: to hear the instruction of your father. Bible says you have only one Father, who is in Heaven. But you have a physical father figure, of whom you are entitled to obey. Hear and obey his instruction. And not only your father. Do not forsake the law of your mother.

One of the Ten Commandments says, Honour your father and your mother so that you may live long in the land that Yahweh your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12)

Children need to regard, respect and listen to the instruction of the father and the law of the mother. Then what happens? They will be a graceful ornament. Yes, of course. There is nothing more valuable than the instruction of the father and the law of the mother. Definitely it’s going to be a graceful ornament on your head and chains on your neck.

You can be proud, feel proud of it, for that will make people astonished about you. Jesus was a young boy who was obedient to parents. That’s why when He was in the temple, people got surprised “how come this child has such amazing knowledge and wisdom?”

Yes, of course, the same will be true if you obey your parents. You may have weaknesses, but try and practice this virtue that has been taught to you.

Loving Father, help us be faithful as children so that the instruction of the father and the law of the mother may be a graceful ornament on our head and chain about our neck. Let Your Spirit convince us of this. In Jesus’ Most Powerful Name, Amen.
